Toy/ Prop Replica Science Fiction Weapon

Alpha Legacy - Space 1999 - Stun Gun
based on the sketch design by Eric Chu

This is a work in progress . . .

Space 1999 was a popular Science Fiction program in the early 1970's. Decades later, the kitschy costumes and realistic model work still occupy the imaginations of a cult following around the world. Some more creative fans have conceptualized how a re-imagined show with updated props would look.

When I saw the sketch for this design by Artist Eric Chu on Facebook, I was inspired to build a 3D version, possibly for 3D printing. As a prop enthusiast, I knew that the design had to include provisions for electronics as well as access to interior hardware.

  • The completed exterior design of the Alpha Stun Gun

  • Top Slide removed to show off the interior

The top surface slides back a half inch then up and off (inspired by automatic handguns). I came up with two ways to secure the slide. A tiny neodymium magnet and a steel plate can fit at the back of the inside of the slide. Metal threaded screw inserts in the slide can be screwed closed via 2-56 screws up through the bottom of the main carriage.

  • Body rendered as clear to expose interior works

The clip pulls out from the front section exposing access to batteries and LEDs that shine through the metallic emitter housings on the front. Compressing tabs with rounded ends grab the inside of the main carriage.

  • The front hand-grip and the web of the hand grip are separate for paint or optional casting in a rubber or elastomeric.

The exterior trigger threads through the hand-grip into an extended lever within the handle. The other end of the lever pushes a standard leaf-type micro-switch. The lever rotates around a thin rod that snaps into détentes in the body.

  • Emitter Housing Set

The metallic emitter housings are slanted on the back, so tabs on each will only allow one possible orientation.

  • More to come . . .

As parts are 3D printed and assembled, I will add more information.
